Your First Step at the Crossroads?

September 14, 2025 · 4 min read

Green valley under a wide cloudy sky

You know the crossroads. Attendance has slid for three years. The pastor is tired but won't say so. The board agrees on exactly one thing: something must change. And every proposed change feels enormous — close a service, sell the building, merge, replant — so nothing changes at all.

Here is what we tell every church standing there: the first step is smaller than you think. It is a weekend of honest listening. Not a vote, not a vision launch — a weekend where an outsider asks your people, in rooms small enough for truth, what they love, what they've lost, and what they'd give their Saturdays for.

Why listening comes first

Big decisions made before listening split churches; the same decisions made after listening unite them. When people have been heard, they can bear change. When they haven't, even good change feels like betrayal. Listening is not delay — it is the foundation the decision stands on.

"Listening is not delay — it is the foundation the decision stands on."

What the weekend produces

A listening weekend ends with a short, plain report: what we heard, what it means, and three possible paths with honest costs. Boards that couldn't agree for a year routinely choose a path within a month of reading it — because the choice finally belongs to everyone, not to the loudest three voices.

If your church is at the crossroads, start there. Our ministry health review is exactly this weekend, and giving partners often fund it in full for congregations that can't — see our donation packages.
